It was another beautiful day at St. Thomas Sports Park in Nashville,Tennessee as the 2014 Tennessee Titans kicked off their third day of training camp, and first full day in pads. Practice was quite spirited as you would expect to see from the first day in pads. Also, you could tell players were settling in and the rust was starting to come off.
Jake Locker is starting to settle in and had a nice day today. In fact all 4 quarterbacks are starting to get into a rhythm and develop some chemistry with the wide receivers. Speaking of which, it’s really nice to see the Titans have some elite talent there and good depth.
I haven’t talked enough about Kendall Wright who is having an amazing training camp and looks poised for that breakout year many have predicted. He and Justin Hunter could be the elite receiver the tandem the Titans haven’t had since moving to Nashville, Tennessee. I keep raving about Michael Preston and for good reason. He looks really good this year and has made some nice catches. Also, Marc Mariani had a nice reception along the right sideline this morning. Youngsters Jaz Reynolds and Derek Hagan keep catching my eye as well.
Dexter McCluster continues to shine and I am very excited to see what he does in this offense. Bishop Sankey continues to make plays and his smoothness running through tackles might actually be underrated. I must admit it’s been pretty impressive. Shonn Greene looks to have added about 5 or so pounds of bulk and had a couple of nice runs. Antonio Andrews has also impressed me with his hard running style. Collin Mooney is also doing a good job trying to impress the coaching staff which will have some tough decisions to make soon.
At the tight end position I need to mention Dorin Dickerson. A 6′ 1″ and 226 pounds he is that hybrid H back and tight end that often goes unmentioned but he keeps catching my eye. A good blocker he is also making plays running and catching the ball. Drafted by the Houston Texans in the seventh round of the 2010 draft, he hasn’t yet made much of an impact in the league but he could be a hidden gem. I recommend keeping an eye on him he could continue to make some noise in camp.
The offensive line continues to gel and I got to watch Taylor Lewan a bit today. He could stand to get a bit stronger but you can see the talent there. I haven’t noticed Brian Schwenke suffering any ill effects from last year’s injury. Veteran Mike Roos has done work just like you expect from the longtime Titan and is quietly having a good training camp.
I haven’t had a chance to observe Byron Stingily much but tackle Jeff Adams caught my eye today. A pretty good technician there. I’m anxious to see Andy Levitre back on the field. Finally, I have really been impressed with Michael Oher who is working hard and doing quite well.
I know people are concerned about reports on Chance Warmack but my observations are that when he is on the field in camp he is doing a good job. I saw reports he needed an IV after practice but it’s been pretty hot the past few days. I’m not concerned about it at all. The offensive line seems to be doing a pretty good job so far and I expect they will continue to get better.
A few notes about the defensive linemen. Karl Klug and Mike Martin are noticeably bigger especially Martin. I have seen Sammie Lee Hill and Al Woods at nose tackle. Shaun Phillips has played some defensive end.
So far Daquan Jones hasn’t stood out to me but it’s not unusual for a young defensive lineman to start slow while getting acclimated to training camp. Lavar Edwards doesn’t appear to be getting a ton of reps either.
The linebackers getting first team reps right now are Kam Wimbley, Derrick Morgan, Zach Brown and Wesley Woodyard. Zaviar Gooden has bulked up and is getting a lot of work in special teams.
Akeem Ayers and Colin McCarthy are getting reps in rotation and Colin McCarthy looked very good today.
The secondary I have written about a lot. I thought Blidi Wreh-Wilson looked more comfortable today and it seems he is settling back in. I still think Coty Sensabaugh will be the guy at right cornerback but he is also getting some playing time in the slot. The safeties are playing well though Pollard did let a wide receiver get behind him to make a play. Sensabaugh made a nice play on a pass intended for Nate Washington this morning.
Finally, this is a fun group to watch and they do look like they are having fun. Tempers flared a bit today which shows they are ready to compete. I will continue to keep you updated from those days I am able to attend camp.
